A Writer's Notebook

Inspiration vs. Perspiration April 30, 2006

I know I need to write even when I don't have inspiration. Writing is work just like everything else. So, I am using The Writer's Idea Book by Jack Heffron to prompt my creativity.

Writer Thomas McGuane goes to his study at a certain time every day and stays there for a scheduled length of time. He sits at his desk. "I don't have to write," he explains, "but I can't do anything else." Try his approach for a week, scheduling a specific time, during which you must sit down at your desk or wherever you write. You don't have to write, but you can't do anything else.

When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us. ~ Helen Keller

Well, I tend to read more than one book at a time. So, my current list is:

  • Ben-Hur, by Lew Wallace This is my all-time favorite book. I could read it over and over and over and never be tired of it.
  • Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen I have of course read this one before as well, but it's worth reading again.
  • A Severe Mercy, by Sheldon Vanauken This was highly recommended by several friends, and so far is proving very good.
  • Anne of Avonlea, by L. M. Montgomery I have an affinity of children's books. I think we better appreciate them as adults.
  • Prince Caspian, by C. S. Lewis See above note.
  • The Hobbit, by J. R. R. Tolkien Again, highly recommended by several friends. I am not much for fantasy, and to be honest am having a very difficult time enjoying this book enough to finish it.

A couple books I finished today:

  • The Metamorphosis, by Frank Kafka Strange book. A guy wakes up one morning changed into a giant bug…but it gives very interesting insight into human nature.
  • The Wasteland, by T. S. Eliot I'm going to have to read this one again to fully grasp it.

Hello there! Welcome to my little corner of the blogosphere. This is not a personal blog – it is where I come to discourse on literary topics. My all-consuming passion is for my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and I pray my writing may reflect that and bring all glory and honor to Him. I am an avid reader by birth, a writer by the grace of God. However, this webspace is victim to my writing prompts, as well as inspiration.

I am making posts here much like a blog, but to make it easier to find specific topics the posts are categorized as follows.

Ruminations – non-connected essays about whatever topic strikes my fancy

My Book Nook – discussions about books I'm reading or have read…and those I'm not and won't. ;-)

Writers' Hangout – posts about the writing life

Got the Block – writing prompts to wake up my muse

Thanks for stopping by!
