A Writer's Notebook

Making Time October 30, 2007

I’ve noticed a recurring theme among many writer/bloggers: we must make time to write. Probably writers already published don’t have quite as hard of a time with this; after all, they are getting a paycheck for their work and already have at least one published volume to point to. Those of us who are still just writing because we must and can’t not, however, often find ourselves up against a wall.

“What are you doing?”

“Writing.”

“Writing what?”

“Um…my book.”

“Oh…well (insert patient, slightly patronizing tone), can you go do this/help me with this/take a break for awhile?”

I think only fellow writers understand this drive to write. Normal people do not. They do not understand that I get antsy when I don’t write every day. They don’t understand that without writing something every day, the words will cease to flow properly. Nor do they understand that spaced-out look. In fact, it usually concerns them. Only another writer will understand. No worries…they’re just thinking. Writers are thinkers. Perpetual thinkers.

I was thinking about writers the other day, and found a rather odd paradox. Many writers are introverts. Yet becoming a writer requires one to be extroverted, to reveal the inner workings of one’s mind. Interesting, isn’t it?

But I am off topic. Making time to write is not easy. A dozen other things seem to be more pressing, and they call for my time. Church activities, homework, house chores, and on and on. If I am to be a writer – and a good writer – I simply must push some of those things aside. THIS is more important. I don’t condone pushing your family aside, or your relationship with God. There are many, many other things though, that could just wait.

Life Goes On October 9, 2007

I need a schedule. A rigid one. But then I would fret because I had no flexibility. Just like I’m fretting right now that I have no rigidity. Ergh. “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”

School is coming along. Life continues to go on. My “practice novel” is growing. Yay. :)

Nothing interesting to say right now…
